Ft. Lewis, Wa

Ft. Lewis/McChord AFB

Ft. Lewis Army Base and McChord AFB are right next to eachother, eventually there has been talk of merging the two bases. I've lived in Washington my whole life. I can tell you about both the AFB and the Army base, as my grandfather was stationed on McChord and my husband was stationed at Ft. Lewis. The housing on Ft. Lewis is standard, they are updating but there are a lot of units stationed here so it's very crowded and sometimes there is a 3-7 month waiting period for housing. The PX can tend to get a little busy and I have found that some of the local stores are comparable to the PX prices, if not less exspensive than the PX. My husband and I really liked shopping at Winco Foods in South Hill/Puyallup. There is a place you can check online at Ft. Lewis so see the wait times are for housing. McChord has very nice housing as well as facilities. What I think is really nice about Washington, that I haven't found at other bases is that Seattle, which is Washington's most popular city, is about 45min-1hr. away. There is a lot to do in Seattle as well as in the surrounding areas. Auburn has a Supermall filled with outlet stores. There is mountains very close and some a little further for skiing, snowboarding, hiking, camping, fishing, ect. There are lots of local parks in Spanaway, Puayllup, Seattle. Lakes for boating and watersports. I would say as a resident the best areas to live are Puyallup, South Hill, DuPont, Lacey (it's a little further from the action but very livable)even Bonney Lake, but there will be some driving, mostly freeway. The bases are in between Puyallup and Lacey. Tacoma has nice parts to it, the waterfront is great for walking but it's still being revamped as part of an ongoing quest to beautify certain area's that have fallen into disrepair or contain shady dealings such as crime and homelessness, this is the same for L
