LCDR

Marine Corps Base Hawaii

MC Air Facility and MC Base, co-located in Kaneohe is a good but relatively small base. Housing is coming along with some very new units for junior and senior enlisted and more in work with expected completion date of mid-2002. Commissary is very good and exchange is small but adequate for most needs. Since Hickam and Pearl Harbor have rather large and extensive facilities with upgrades in work, not worth it to build a larger exchange here. Most everything is a 15-30 minute drive. Large shopping malls in Kaneohe and Waikiki areas are first rate, Costco and Sam's club are easily accessible as well. NO Target stores but Walmart and Big K are here!! Aikahi Elementary in Kailua on the Windward side is nationally recognized while elementary school on base is better than public schools in area. Local housing is expensive but managable while awaiting base housing. The weather as you probably already know, is fabulous. Lots to do and see especially if you can get away to other islands before you PCS. Water sports are abundant but hiking, lots of golf, organized sports and leagues are avail, great restaurants and night life, concerts and museums. Pro teams are lacking but there is the Pro Bowl and local UH teams can satisfy for a tour. Great place and a once in a lifetime opportunity to live in paradise!!
