Hickam is a very nice and clean base. However, the housing is old but they are renovating right now. We don't live there anymore. We miss it alot. I did not like the school on base not challenging for kids that want to learn. We found an awsome and affordable christian school in Halawa Hights about 10 minutes drive from the base. The beach on base is not the best, you see the runway and it is very noisy. That's about all the disadvantages of Hawaii or Hickam. Hawaii is a fun place to be if you like water, hiking etc.We saw dolphins and whales you don't even need to go on a boatride. It is a paradise for children. I you ever go there you have to check out Ko'olina in the western part of the island. Oahu is much more than Waikiki Beach it is ashame that most of the military people don't leave the bases that much. Also, a lot of people think there is not much to do. Oahu offers a lot of sights. For example in Hawaii is the only palace in the USA. If you ever get a chance to go there it is worth it!!! Don't say you have been to Hawaii when you only been in Waikiki there is more to it!!! Ka'ena Point in the western part of the island is a nice place to relax - away from all the tourism. Get to know some locals especially older people they know some interesting stories about Hawaii. I have been to many places all around the world Hawaii is definatly one of the nicest places I've seen. Hawaii became my second home and I will keep going back there for the rest of my life.
