Eielson AFB AK

Eielson is 26 miles from Fairbanks and the temperatures of interior Alaska take some getting use to. We have temperatures in the sub zeros most of the winter, and we recently have been 30 degrees below zero. Three weeks ago we were 45 degrees below zero. So the temperatures do take time to get use to. When it is this cold you plug your cars in and sometimes you have to go out and start your car every so often just to make sure to keep the engine warm enough. As for housing, some is nice and some is just okay. Most housing has a garage, but there are a few without still. The BX is very small, but FT. Wainright (in Fairbanks) has a bigger BX. Fairbanks is growing slow and we should after 9 years of talking, be getting a Walmart. Last year we got a Home Depot and there is a Fred Myers ( similar to Walmart) and Sears to shop at. We don't have malls, but instead strip malls that offer a few stores, but there is NO Dillards, Macys, Target, or TJI Fridays. Restraunts are limited, however, you can find afew good ones in Fairbanks. Eielson is for someone who wouldn't mind the cold 8-9 months out of the year and for someone who loves to fish and hunt. However, finding time to actually fish, hunt, and experience everything here is hard to do. If you ever find your way up here in the last frontier don't forget your wallet, because you will want to see everything. By the way things are also alittle expensive up here.
