How much money do people normally tip their baggers. There seems to be no set amount like. They seem to work harder than waiters/waitresses and do not get paid. I would like to hear from others on this subject. The commissary itself makes no opinion as it does not want to get involved. As far as they are concerned they are just free workers. Help please

For me it depends on the amount of things I have: if I'm in express then usually $1 no matter what; over $100 then $2; over $150 then $3; over $200 then $4 (haven't been over that amount in awhile). If it is nasty conditions and they are really nice then I will give them more. It really does depend on the individual themselves. It really also depends on what you can afford. Friend's kids have worked there and easily made $100 a day or more on a payday weekend far more than minimum wage. One girl made $20 in 1 trip.
Commissary is non profit, so that means the surcharge is the only thing that pays for the employees which is the cashiers, stockers, managers, etc.. If they pay the baggers then they have to raise the surcharge.

I havent been to my commissary in quite some time but I usually tip big. One of my shopping trips usually fills up their cart they push so I usually give 5.00-7.00. Everyone is different in how or why they tip what they do.
I actually took a tip away from a bagger once because she told my mother that she needed to tip because they only get paid in tips. This was BEFORE my mother's things were even rung up! I was so pissed off that she treated my mother this way that I took the money out of her cup, gave it back to my mom, told the bagger she didnt deserve it after that comment, and then complained to the manager.

Years ago I read in one of the flyers/magazines that you can pick up from the commissary that you should tip about .25 per bag. Of course that was a couple of years ago. Depends on what I spend and how many bags I have. I usually tip around 3-4 dollars. It also depends on how they "bag" my groceries. I like to go during the work week, when I can, so I can get some retired folks to bag. I find they do the best job. On the weekends you have all the kids, and while some do okay, I usually have to direct them in bagging or else my bread is on the bottom, the bags need a wagon to carry them in (too heavy) and the checker likes to fling my food (bottles and all) across the belts to the baggers, all the while she is chit chatting with them. I usually have to advise them that I really REALLY want to take that food home and be able to EAT it.
Think about it, during a payday week/weekend they are racking in (tax free) dollars. Some (I have asked) are making several hundred dollars/week. You do not have to tip and if I get a rude bagger and I peek to see how they bagged and it is awful that tip is almost nothing. I have to work for I get and I expect them to do the same and not think it is a given. I also will not put up with rudness and will not hesitate to go back in or call the manager and give them the baggers number and tell them about my experience if it was unpleasant. Customer is king and that is who pays your paycheck.

HEY - I generally tip 50 cents a bag. I had one bagger ask me something and it was not in English, I asked the cashier what she said, she didn't know. Another bagger in the next line said. "Do you want paper or plastic." I said, "Teller to speak English, we are in the US." I did not get another reply.

I agree with the speak English Ron. It drives me nuts when the whole group checking you out is speaking in another language and I can't understand what in the world is going on. Now if I was overseas.....okay...somewhat understandable. But not when I am stateside. I get irked.
I also get irked when they are walking me out to the car and telling me some sob story of their entire life and how hard it is. I want to say "listen" everyone has something going on their lives--do you have a couple of hours and I'll share my sob story......like I am going to start whipping out 20's for a tip by you crying on my shoulder. I just want my grocery bags and some plesant chit chat about the weather. And oh yea THANK YOU after I tip you!!!!!!!!!!!! When I don't get that if I see you next time you are not getting a tip from me and I will tell you so.

The money they make is taxed they have to submit the amount to the head bagger or something like that and it is deducted and paid for them.

I used to tip 1.00 a cart but we only shop once a month unless its just for a item we run out of like milk and then its just 1.00. When we do our monthly grocery shopping we tip between 8 and 10.00. Depends on how well they bag and listen. We ask them to put cold stuff in last so we get it out first. This trip the bagger put on the cold stuff in last and put it all on one side of the trunk so I knew exactly where it was.

Why have baggers then? It is outrageous to expect anyone to just work for free or have an income at the will of others, plus many of us who shop are barely making ends meet and go to the commisary to save those extra cents and when then you have or expected to tip, then the savings disappears. Many of us depend on that three to five dollars saving on our grocery bill and can not afford to tip. The cashier should bag like many stores do.

MJ-how is the money taxed from bagging? I asked the lady that bagged my groceries on Friday and she said no. They do not work for the commissary. Deca is not paying them an hourly wage. I know this is "tips" but think about it-they report everyday they work what they make to the headbagger and she does what with that? She would have to have a bookeeping system with their social's and prepare the approiate tax form for them to report this at tax time and then they (the bagger) would be responsible to pay taxes on these tips! Is this really the case? Anyone want to comment or add to this? Maybe I am off base.

We usually go to the Commissary once per month, so we tip the bagger $5.00, regardless of the amount of items we purchase. We shop at Wright-Patterson, and generally speaking, these folks do a great job!

We go to the commissary a lot. I tip pretty good. But my husband doesn't like to tip the baggers. He thinks they're nothing but a bunch of aged out hookers that try to scam you with their boo hoo stories. I tell him that even if that is true, it's a job and they work on tips. But he insists on taking the groceries out himself and doesn't bother tipping at all. Oh well, you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

A bagger @LAFB told me they each pay $2.00 a day to bag groceries and that they are not paid by the commissary. My late husband told me the original tip was $.25/bag, but it got so that baggers were putting so few items into lots of bags, that I should tip on a percentage of my total purchases, not per bag.

I was thinking about this thread today cause I went to the commissary. I had a lot of bags and I tipped 5.00 which is usually what I tip cause I usually have a large haul since I live 40 minutes from there and I only go once a month. Anyway, there are tippers like me and there are small tippers and no tippers..... I figure between the 3 the baggers are probably getting anywhere from 7 to 10 dollars an hour. Maybe even more. So what is the minimum wage in your state? Im in IL and its 8.25 here. So the way I see it they are probably making more than minimum wage for a pretty easy job. So I dont understand why ppl try and defend how they tip because they think the baggers are not making any money. I can bet most of them make more money that someone slinging fries and burgers at the fast food restaurant. Just saying........

Agree Agree Agree with you Armywife!! I have watched them bag and run out and put groceries into cars and done the math. They do very well and especially since this going into their pockets without paying taxes.

I absolutely agree with ArmyWife/PA and about them speaking English. I am Asian, and I can tell you that some of the comments I hear the baggers saying in their native languages are quite rude. Yes, some of them are calling you names in their language! How rude! Obviously their not smart enough to realize that some of us know other languages. NO ONE IS FORCING THEM TO WORK THERE - IT'S EMPLOYMENT AT WILL, like most jobs. A tip insinuates a level of service that pleases the customer. However, these clerks and baggers are rude regardless of a tip. There are some I've tipped that seemed to be ok at first, but then, they don't even thank you! And then there are some times when I have a few items and I tell them I would bag it myself, and I'm already starting to bag it myself and then they push me aside and tear the bag from my hands! Once I was even done bagging my 1 bag and this bagger just had to stick her hands in my bag "to rearrange it" and then expected a tip! I wish that the commissary would get rid of this arrangement or get rid of baggers completely. If they want to find jobs that pay better, Walmart and McDonalds and other similar stores are always hiring. Military families really aren't saving much if the $5 they saved from shopping goes back into tips. I would shop there more often if the baggers were not there and only because I believe in supporting the military, not because I would be saving much. It's always a terrible experience shopping there, and I avoid doing so unless I have to. It really comes down to the rude service, tips aside.

My husband (now retired) would bag at our local commissary and they strictly worked for tips only. Maybe it's different now but he could pick up an extra couple of hundred dollars bagging on a weekend. That was 15 - 20 years ago so not sure how they are paid now. We usually tip $1 per bag

I tip like I do waiters 15% of the total, unless there is bad weather. But if I pull my car up to the front in bad weather then it is just 15%

there are so many baggers at our commissary that they switch out alot.honestly,yea i feel for them but i wouldnt pay give someone a tip for somethen can do myself.they should just can payed by the hr like everyone else there.ido give 5bucks cuz your required to give tip.the commesary is the only place iv gone where u tip baggers.

I tip according to the amount I buy. I try to be generous. At our base we have college kids as well as single moms trying to make it. They are always polite and I have never heard anything negative from these workers and I appreciate their work. I don't want the surcharge at the commissary to be increased so I will continue as I have been.

The issue of tipping the baggers is a dear one to me. It is so important. For the most part, the baggers work so hard to earn just a couple of dollars from the shopper. So, it is my belief as I watch customer after customer dump on my baggers, to give as your heart feels is necessary. No one requires it, and it is not even a moral obligation- that being said, it is compassion and the reality that they are serving you.

I have absolutely no problems with tipping baggers. BUT--I expect them to bag my groceries with the thought process that I am taking them home to cook and eat. Another words bread does not belong on the bottom of the bag and canned goods on top. Yes this has happened to me. Also do not CRAM groceries in till the point the bag is starting to rip. Do not "throw" my food in the bag. Just because they are cans does not mean we are playing slam dunk with them. Put heavy produce on the bottom and light on top. Another words do not put my grapes on the bottom with bags of apples on top. Be polite. Say hello and THANK YOU after you get your tip. If you do not say thank you I will never tip you again. Someone needs to take baggers and teach them how to "bag." It would only take a few minutes. I also do not want my cleaning products mixed in with my food. I tip well. But if you do not bag it right I will make you redo it. Worst case call the store and complain to the Head Bagger.
I think they need to either get rid of them or make it a paying job. It must be nice to make that much in tips and yes I have done the math and NOT pay taxes.

We have shopped the commissary for many yrs. My dh retired in 88. I used to tip 1.00 a cart but not since we only shop once a month I tipped 10.00. I have figured it up too and the baggers make roughly 40.00 a hour for good tippers or good days. I have a cashier ask me once what I tipped. It kinda offended me. The baggers know us well too and do a really good job bagging our groceries so I don't mind tipping. I did have one bagger get really rude once when I honestily didn't have the extra to tip. She stood in the parking lots shouting tip. I tried to explain and apoligize but she was very rude and upset. I understood but I had overspent and had to take groceries off and didn't have any extra. It don't happen hardly ever and I do make it up if and when I can

My friend is a bagger and it really takes a toll on their bodies and emotions. A lot of baggers have back problems from lifting heavy things all day and problems with their feet and ankles from standing for hours. Emotionally they run into rude customers daily and most smile and try to shake it off! Sometimes it's hard. Is it tax free yes. The average amount they make is 30-60$ Bad days lucky if they get 20$. They rotate so if thiers 11 baggers and 2 registers open they make hardly anything because they keep bagging till they get tipped. If you give them 5$ they might have gotten nothing prior to you. They don't get tipped as often as you think. My friend took 2 carts out and the guy gave her 50 cents and told her to get a real job. Another time a lady sneezed wiped her nose with the dollar and then gave it to her wet. Their is way too many stories to tell but it's not a fun job. They do it just like anyone else to pay their bills. If the bagger is rude or bags things wrong they deserve nothing. complain to the store and give thier bagger number that's on your receipt. They can get fired for rudeness. If you find a bagger you like or does a great job you can always request the person if thier there and avoid problems. That's what I do! I get a kick out of tipping big and see them grinning ear to ear it makes thier day!!

They have problems with their backs and legs?? OMG. That is what I have to say. I am a nurse and stand on my feet 12 hours a day. I have been doing that forever. By the end of the day my back is killing me, my legs hurt, and my ankles are swollen. Do I complain? HEll no because it is the profession I made a choice to do. They have choices...their job is not any harder than others that are on thier feet everyday. I could list all of the professions but that would take too long. GO get a real job that pays and pay your taxes. That is what I say. I personally say get rid of the baggers.

i go to the commissary once a month, i get a cart as full as it can get. i have an oriental lady that bags my groceries and does a good job. i tip her $20.00, she really appreciates the tip.

My hubby lilkes to take the groceries out himslef and he usually gives the bagger who does the most bagging as it is sometimes two baggers working together and it's usually $1.00 cash!

Bagging can be hard work and Claire up there sometimes there are no "REAL JOBS TO GET!" So most of us take what we can get. I always tip $5 but I used to be a bagger overseas where I could not go out in town to get a job and there were no jobs open on the base. And some of these baggers are either older and no one wants to hire them and social security isn't enough to live on, or they are students and this is an easy way to work around the school schedule and for some it is on the base and at a walkable distance. Sorry folks but all jobs are real jobs and it is not their fault that the commissary set this up as a nonpaying position. Have you noticed there are usually not enough cashiers to ring the lines up much less have them bag and due to GS pay rates the commissary is not going to spend the money to bring in more people just to let them bag. Be nice to the baggers they do work hard and unfortunately have to put up with rude snobby people more than you think.

First of all, bagging is a "real job." If you are providing service for money, then it is a job. Most people who work as baggers are either older and trying to supplement their retirement money and earn a little extra, or a young student who needs a small income with flexible hours. They obviously aren't out looking for a 40 hour a week job. I easily save 20-50% by shopping at the commissary. The other day I was in a local grocery store and noticed that the cereal I pay $2.25 at the commissary, was $4.50 at a competitor store. I get huge savings at the commissary! I usually do 2 large trips a month, and I tip about $3 when I shop. I can easily afford $6 a month in tips when I'm saving over $100 a month shopping! If I am picking up a handful of items, I allow them to bag but I take it out, and I tip $1 for the bagging. I really don't get why it's so complicated. :)

I try to tip $2.00 every time unless I have a carload, then it is $5. I use coupons and get extra savings from that. I also try to get in the line the Airmen are working as a fundraiser. I would rather my tip go towards something like a family day, pizza party, or social for the guys. Someone is always working in there in a line or 2. AND,, you get good American Conversation about things going on in town.
I do also love our little ladies that are always in there bagging too. They have even blinged out their sun visors. They are SO cute!! I try to go to those I have seen before if there is not a fund raiser going on.

Typically it's $3 for me, sometimes a couple dollars more if i have a huge load or the bagger goes out of their way for me or anyone else. I just feel awful that's ALL that get paid but since furlough started our commissary is CRAZY busy on Weds since they had been closed for 2 days. So I'm hoping that all the extra naggers they have are getting their fair turn and if they are and people are being generous then they are doing fairly well for a day of pay, I hope!!!
