Will they close the Commissaries?

This was in my last AF Times. The DOD officials have reportedly asked the Defense Commissary Agency to develop a plan to close all U.S. Commissaries. It would be a year away - it would have to be approved by Congress, where many lawmakers would oppose it. (This was the jest of the story.)
Rep.Heck from Nevada. an Army reservist, said other proposals under concideration include rising the surcharge to 10% from the current 5%; reaising prices bt 2% to 3% to pay for shipping products to overseas stores.

Sad to think that this is the onnly way that government can think of away to save a few bucks. I am a military spouse. My husband served 26 years in the Army Reserves and then Air Force. I don't have a problem with the surcharge being increased, even though as a retiress our benefits are being decreased, COLAs and Tricare premium to increase dramatically. The commissary is a benefit that we use on a routine basis. I hear alot of military members say that it is just as cheap to shop at Walmart. I can guarantee that Walmart is cheaper than other grocery stores but not any cheaper than the commissary. I have had to live without having access to a military commissary when my husband was an AF Recruiter. Can congress not look at closing the BX stores/AAFES instead of the commissaries? This is disgraceful to say the least. Congress needs to cut their own pay and benefits before closing the commissaries. The buildings are alrady there and the surcharge is used to pay for the salaries of the cashiers, etc. Are the cashiers, etc. government employees? There has to be somthing else that can be cut by congress!!

The BX/Exchanges actually pay for themselves and a lot of their profit goes to the MWR, so they do not have to budget like the commissaries do. The wages of the employees are paid out of the surcharge so it is actually the cost of the upkeep, maintenance, new buildings, repairs, etc.. that a lot of the money in the budget to the commissaries goes to. Yes you can save money at other places like WalMart, Publix, Safeway, etc.. but in a lot of communities the commissaries are the mainstay. They have actually found the number of people using them as gone up over the past while.

While I do understand that there was a lot of benefits promised to the Retirees including free healthcare, at the time it was done it didn't cost $125 for one shot or $500 for an exam or $25,0000 for a surgery and the list continues. So those unfortunately have to be looked at and Tricare for Retirees is still way cheaper than a lot of the other plans out there available even if the rates were raised.

I work at the commissary but we haven't been confirmed with anything yet. I just wished they stopped making superstores, maybe close down one day a week or weekends, no more holiday pay and all that as long as they don't close the commissaries. :/

I do not believe they will close the them. We are stationed in Pittsburgh for a recruiting assignment and they just opened a brand new from scratch comm and P/X. So, I don't see them closing permanently. It's kind of like the USPS. It's government owned and whether bankrupt or not it will still be there. My guess is they may close another day of the week, raise prices and limit how many people they employ. They could also raise surcharge (which I have no doubt they'll do). It is a tough situation. And in the end WE get burned, not congress.
