I'm set to ship to basic for active duty Air Force. I have a two year old and I'm no longer with his mother. Will the military still let me live in family housing since I plan to get my son during the summer and extended holidays? I just don't know how it would work. I don't want to go and them make me live in a dorm and then I wouldn't be able to see my son. Thank you.

Jake, I am so proud that someone like you is following in my footsteps… NOT!!! I served over 30-years in the Air Force and would have loved to have a selfish, simple-minded individual like you assigned to me. I would make sure that you learn the meaning of "Service before Self."

Oh I bet your recruiter told you that you will get a nicely furnished base housing unit for you to lounge in after you put in a 4-hour duty day and that the child care will be provided free.

Additionally, while in Basic Training, you can take weekends off to visit with your child… Not only that, after Basic Training, when you are in tech school (which will last for months, possible up to 1-year…), you can take sabbaticals to spend quality time with your child as you travel the world free of charge on MAC flights…

None of this is going to happen; you will serve your time in basic training and then ship directly to technical training. Then after you have completed tech school, you will be granted probably two-weeks leave…

Then, after Tech School, you will again be housed in a dormitory. Depending on your specific situation (legally speaking, Dependency status…) you may get some extra pay… But do not count on it. Unless you have full time dependents, you will not get money for housing and you sure as hell will not get base housing… Most bases do not allow airmen to move off base until they have finished their up-grade training (Yeah, more training after tech school…) and reached a certain rank…

Read this article, "A Look at What One Can, and Cannot, Do in Air Force Tech School"…

Moreover; remember this, you have raised your right hand and taken the oath… To you it was probably just words that your mumbled, but you have signed the paperwork and signed the "Unlimited Liability Clause" and that means you may have to give your life for your country…
