What to do?

What to do?

Ok, I need some help on this one. We found a stray dog roaming around in our neighborhood, she has no collar, no tags and is extremely skinny, and by extremely I do mean she is to the point of emaciation. However, she is a pure breed and therefore I"m sure someone paid quite a bit of money for her. So, here's my dilemma, do I make attempts to locate the dogs owner?
Now, if the dog had tags, was obviously well cared for etc. this would not be an issue for me, but I'm very concerned, for good reason, that this dog was not being well cared for and I fear if we do find the owners and return this dog she will possibly be going back into a very abusive/neglectful environment. But, what if I'm wrong? Then again, can I take that chance that I'm wrong?
This dog is so timid and so starved for affection, we ran to the store to get some food for her and OMG at how hungry she was, she would have continued to eat until she vomited if we had let her.
Right now, she's sound asleep curled up with my oldest son, her tail hasn't stopped wagging since we bought her into our home.
I just want to do the right thing here but I'm not sure what that is at this point.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

In my opinion if the dog came from a good home it would not be so starved for attention. Most dogs when they bond with their family they bond for life. I would check the paper and Craig's list to see if any one is looking for the dog if they aren't then I would keep it and give it the love it seems to so desperately needs.

First of all, I would take him to the vet asap! ONe of our cats was a stray and that is the first thing I did because she was a mess, burnt, and had fleas. You have no idea where exactly this dog has been so I hope since you have already let the family interact with it, that it doesnt have any serious illnesses. Secondly, yes good idea to check for LOST DOG signs. ONly thing i worry about with that is, if this dog is really that skinny, then it has been "lost" for a long time. They wont get like that overnight. So either the owners really didnt want it, or it has been gone so long that they gave up and took signs down. You certainly have a dilema on your hands. But first priority is getting that dog to a vet.
Good Luck!

You are a very very very good good person to take that dog in. I love animals and it brings me to tears to read how you found that dog and the condition it was in. I agree with others take it to the Vet to get checked. Check the papers and other avenues to see if someone has lost it. Chances are this dog got dumped for some reason or another since their is no collar or tags. I hope you keep the dog. Let us know.

You might want to call some local Veterinarians to see if they will check (free) to see if she has a Chip implanted. Your a wonderful person...

Thank you everyone for the advice. We did take her to the vet and he said she was dangerously malnourished and based upon her reactions he believes she does come from not only a neglectful but also abusive family. She was not microchipped. There was no way of knowing what (if any) shots she has received so he got her started on the basics. So, after a great deal of prayer and soul searching we are now the proud owners of this beautiful little girl. She's on a special diet and will need lots of vet appts. before she's fully back on her feet but she seems to be thoroughly enjoying herself as our new family member and I'm confident that we made the right decision.

You done a wonderful thing. What kind of breed is she and what did you folks name her.
Down the the road would give us a report on how she is doing?
