Anyone been stationed here? What's it like? Good schools/homes are where? Areas to avoid? Thanks!

Ft. Leavenworth is a very pretty, small base that has really good schools. It's really not that much bigger than a college campus.
I don't know how old your kids are, but Bradley Elementary (one of the 3 elm schools on post) is the BEST. I really enjoyed the facility (they have their own Planetarium!) and they are very high academically.
There is some REALLY really nice housing on post (and some not-so-nice). Any thing in the Potawatamie Hill and Upper 7th Cavalry road area is really nice and new. There are some renovated houses on the 6th Cav/6th Infantry/Kansas Ave that are pretty decent, but they are renovated older houses, and I've heard mixed reviews. All of that is in the Bradley district.
The historical housing on the other side of post is gorgeous, but not always kid friendly and I've heard stuff about Infantry barracks (like, the whole building has to approve the heat/airconditioning date, ect) that would have made me hesitate to live there, despite the awesome central location and size of the units. It can get mighty hot in those upper units if you have a heat wave before the "approved" switch on date.
Leavenworth (the town) is small, but both it and the post have flourished in the last few years. North Kansas City is about 1/2 hour away, and so is the Legends area. Lots of shopping, movies, dining out, etc. to be had.
I wouldn't live off post as there is really nice housing available with great schools. Off-post is hit or miss (remember... there are 7 prisons in Lv county!) and you have to drive out to find really good neighborhoods. Plus the rents off post are KRAAAAAZY high for anything decent. Seriously, live on post. Your husband can bike/walk to class. There isn't a point in housing that is more than 1.5-2 miles distance.
The biggest thing is that if you want ANYTHING as far as services/Skies programs/hourly care/ect for your kid, you have to jump on it the second it opens up. There is fierce competition for slots, esp after school. You can't "think about it" for a while.
We were there for 4.5 years. It didn't completely suck ;) and was waaaay better than other places we've been. Is there anything else you need to know?
Oh! There is a jr. high on post (up to 9th?) but no high school. Do NOT send your child to Leavenworth High. Either pay for the private school in town (Immaculata?) or live out towards Lansing.
