Buttery and Garlicy Breadsticks

Recipe: This simple recipe for copycat "Olive Garden" style Breadsticks makes buttery, garlicy, and chewy breadsticks. WARNING: These breadsticks are utterly addictive! SPECIAL NOTE: When it comes to breadmaking, you will always ensure the best and most consistent results by weighing the flour. If you bake often, invest in a kitchen scale; it makes all the difference in the world! The recipe has only six ingredients! However, it is easiest if you get all your ingredients out first, measured, and set up your stand mixer fitted with the dough hook ready to go. You can make this dough by hand; just get ready to knead for about 10 minutes... Prep Time is about 2 to 3 hours, Bake Time is 12 minutes; and this recipe makes 12 breadsticks... INGREDIENTS: 1 cup + 2 tablespoons warm water; 1-1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast; 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (divided...); 3 to 3-1/4 cups all-purpose flour; 1-1/2 teaspoons salt; 3 tablespoons oil (vegetable or canola oil); GARLIC BREAD TOPPING INGREDIENTS: 2 tablespoons margarine (or butter); 1/2 teaspoon salt; 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder; DIRECTIONS: Step 1: Add warm water, yeast, and 1 teaspoon of the sugar to the bowl of a stand mixer and stir gently. Allow to rest for 10 minutes. The yeast should "proof" during this time (meaning the water mixture will get slightly foamy looking, which confirms the yeast is working). If this doesn't happen, your yeast is not fresh, or the water was too hot. Step 2: Add remaining sugar (1 tablespoon + 2 teaspoons sugar), 1-1/2 cups flour, 1-1/2 teaspoon salt, and vegetable oil and mix on medium speed to combine. Step 3: Add another 1-1/2 cups flour and knead mixture for 5 to 7 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. the dough should pull away from the sides fo the bowl but still be slightly sticky to the touch. Add remaining 1/4 cup fo flour (only if needed...). Step 4: Transfer dough to a large , greased bowl and cover tightly with plastic wrap. Allow to rest in a warm place until it doubles in size (any where from 60 to 90 minutes...). Step 5: Once risen, punch dough down and divide it into 12 equal parts. Roll each piece of dough into a 9 inch rope and transfer to a greased cookie sheet. Cover again with plastic wrap and let it rise again for 1 hour. Step 6: Bake breadsticks at 425 degrees F for 10 to 12 minutes. While the breadsticks bake, mix the garlic topping ingredients together. Brush the butter mixture over the tops of the hot, baked breadsticks. Step 7: Serve the breadsticks warm. They go especially well with all of my soup recipes... (FINAL NOTE: You can store the breadsticks in an airtight container or in the freezer.)
