Welcome to Shaw AFB, SC. This isn't the nicest base nor is it the worst. The people in this area are just like everyone else, some nice, some not so nice. The housing leaves a lot to be desired, but they have begun to demolish and replace it with better. The area is nice, weather is pretty great year round, no snow, but be ready for humidity in the summer. The beach is only about 1 1/2 hrs from here and it's an easy trip to the mountains. Florida is just a days drive from here. Sumter is a medium size town that is growing tremendously and the people of the town "love" their military. Most businesses offer military discounts and every year they have a Sumter/Shaw AFB Street Fest. They also have military appreciation week. There are lots of things to do in and around the area and with Columbia being on 35 miles from here, what you can't find in town you can find there. The schools are not the best but the teachers and others are working hard to improve them.
