We are stationed at Hurlburt Field, but have lived on Eglin housing until recently. We have been here for 3 1/2 years. The housing on Eglin is OLD and gross. The BX and commissary are nice, but overall, the base is pretty old. Hurlburt Field is small and has a very small commissary and bx, but all of which are fairly new. Hurlburt Field on base housing is not all that great, a lot of friends have serious roach problems. Commando Village (off base government housing for Hurlburt Field) is very nice, but has a huge wait list. As far as housing off base, well it is ridiculously expensive and hard to find. This is a huge tourist area, so during tourist season your prices (especially gas) sky rocket. There are lots of things to do here, but after you have done them all, everything gets old really quick. Everything is also pretty expensive, but some things are well worth the money. If you have ever had good seafood, you will think the seafood here is awful. This area is also huge on clubs, bars, cars, and booze; so if any of that is your cup of tea then this is the place for you. The beaches here are amazing, but the water gets nasty by the end of june with algae, jellyfish, seaweed, or red tide. Overall, I haven't really enjoyed my stay, but for many people, this is a great area. Be weary though, this area is also known as the black hole!!
