I loved 29 Palms. I was there a year and a half and for the first seven I was alone since my husband was in Iraq. I found the base very friendly. The commissary and PX were very nice. Our housing was excellent as was the management. Within 24 hours they would fix any complaint. The town of 29 Palms isn't the greatest, but if you like nature you'll love it. Joshua Tree National Park has endless hiking trails, there's other smaller parks all around, too. Las Vegas is only a 4 hour drive and Los Angeles is only 2. Palm Desert and Palm Springs have great malls and restaurants, only about an hour away.
My only complaint is that the base itself could have more amenities, like Camp Pendleton has.
