Shaw AFB, SC is a nice base. One drawback is that there isn't much to do around the area. Sumter is a small town with not much to offer for activities. It's also no secret that SC doesn't have very good schools, but there have been improvements recently. There is a nice park here called Swan Lake that we frequent with the children to feed the ducks, geese, swans, etc. The nearest Chuck E. Cheese's is a 45-minute drive away in Columbia, SC; you can also find the very popular Riverbanks Zoo in the state capitol. However, this is a good central location to a lot of places. In little over one hour, you can drive to Charleston, SC which is a beautiful and historic coastal town or go to Myrtle Beach, SC where there is always something happening with great outlet shopping and beaches over-run with tourists, lots of entertainment. The base itself is very well-kept. Much of the housing is quite old, but all seem to constantly undergo quality renovations. There is a wide variety of people here and most are friendly. One thing to keep in mind about this base is that it is pretty busy in the deployment department at all times. The climate here is hot and humid much of the year but it does get cold in the Winter. Basically, we don't have a Spring or Fall here. If you are interested, take a look at the base website or check out www.sumteronline.com for more information on the nearest town.
