I like Ft Wainwright very much. I have a disabled child who is receiving WONDERFUL services thru the Fairbanks School System. The commissary carries the same items as the commissary at Ft Hood (our previous station). I've used the Kamish Clinic for myself and my 3 kids and found the physicians, PAs, and the staff to be very knowledgeable and courteous. My home is small but livable. Off post housing is very expensive and you have to supply our own water in some areas. The driving conditions get pretty risky in the winter months so it is best to live on post if possible. That explains a "long" waiting list. It took us 4 weeks to get in our 3 bedroom home but the billeting rooms are exceptionally nice. I would like to take the time to say that I've read many comments about different posts, it seems that folks just have a lot to complain about. One complaint I repeatedly saw was regarding housing. So take those complaints as a grain of salt. Better housing is an issue bigger than the post you are locating to. I just love it here in Alaska. Buy a 4 wheeler and a ski machine before coming. They are quite expensive to buy here, and you will want them.
