We're retired now, but I just had to add my opinions too. We've been all over, even some of the bases are now closed (sad to say). All were great in their own little way. I shop at McChord now, and love the commisary there. However,I have found through out my military years, the BX's can be high priced, so if the nearby towns do have larger department stores, its better to shop there. My son is now stationed at Mt. Home AFB and I'm truly glad we were never stationed there. The base itself is really great (in its own ways), forturnately for Beth, new base housing is going up all over. The town outside of base is very depressing (to me), but like Kathy said, you have to find the good in all the places you're stationed. If you don't, you'll be a miserable person the whole tour. I loved being stationed at Kadena, in Okinawa. We came from England AFB in Louisian before Kadena, so the humidity we were used to. I too loved the people there, but since I'm old, we didn't have online shopping back then, so we had to settle for the BX or shopping the Sears or Penney's catalogs :-) You have to watch out for the Okinawan taxi drivers though, they are wild. Always find something to enjoy where you are, it will make your married and family life a whole lot happier.
