Pearl Harbor was the best duty station we have ever had. We lived off base for awhile, but chose to live in Aliamanu Army Housing though we are in the Navy. The housing was a bit old where we lived. The Navy housing was being built when were there. The new housing is real nice though. However, we did enjoy living there because of the wonderful weather, the many beautiful beaches and the ohana of the locals. We loved camping at Bellows AFB. We went out every weekend to find free concerts or shows at Ala Moana. The fourth of July fireworks display at Ala Moana is spectacular, wherein it synchronizes with a local radio station as well as a live orchestra in front of Waikiki Beach. As a military spouse, I was picked up to work at Tripler Army Medical Center, which was just 10 minutes from where we lived. Even the doctors wear Aloha shirts. Living in the economy is expensive, but being military gives us a good advantage as we can shop at the local commissaries and get good deals. As we are military, we also get the local rate (kama-aina - meaning local) in various places. They even have Wal-Mart there (Mililani & Kunia) which is open 24 hrs and even Costco and Sam's Club. The Aloha Stadium shows games frequently and hold a Swap Meet/flea market three times a week. Hickam AFB is right next to Pearl Harbor as well as the Arizona Memorial. Very nice duty station!
