Lackland - The Gateway

Lackland AFB

Lackland is a good base overall. The +'s include low cost off-base housing in San Antonio; a great military hospital (Wilford Hall); and a good commissary & exchange. The -'s would be long waiting lists for on-base housing which are all pretty old; not very good club or family activities available (but one needs to remember that Lackland is the Gateway to the Air Force and it is where all airmen go through for basic training, so there is a different kind of mission on base), and it can get pretty hot and humid. Also not a bad place to explore South Texas and Mexico. We have enjoyed our stay here, but are looking foward to Wright-Patterson or Anderson AFB.
