as a native san antonian i have to refute the previous comment below. yes, i agree base housing is a little drab, okay, a whole lotta drab. the look on my face when my husband suggested living on base was unforgettable. san antonio, with it's cost of living so low, has plenty of affordable housing. the climate is wonderful. if you can hang in there during july and august, our winters more than make up for it. and, there is SO much to do year round. it's a great place for families; sea world, fiesta texas, the zoo (which i believe ranked in the top five in the nation at one time) etc, lots of attractions. for the more nightlife crowd, there's fiesta, the riverwalk, and randolph is about 45 minutes or so from austin, touted as the live music capitol of the world. san antonio is very rich in culture, with many events to vouch for it. my only regret about marrying into the military, is that i will possibly be leaving my beloved hometown for someplace that i'll have to wait 'til may to grow tomatoes.
