Fort Drum, NY - Houseing

Fort Drum NY

HOUSING: I have heard a lot from friends, neighbors, and on the news that there is a houseing shortage up here. Drum has sent letters to local hotels and even campground that have cabins stateing that they would like to house people there (I saw one of the letters). I have seen flyers that say you have to get a letter of no vacancy from the Drum Inn before you can seek out a hotel elsewhere. But it took about 30 min to get my house (sep 03) and my neighbors downstairs only took 4 hours (oct 04). So I really dont know whats going on. There is a lot of houseing off base, in Calcium (aprx 2 miles), Black River (just out nash gate), just out north gate, and Even Govenour (aprox 30 miles). I think it depends on how big your family is. If you have 0-1 children it might be easier. They will be remodeling houseing according to the new contract they have out. I hear real carpet will be installed. (right now the 2nd floor has high traffic carpet, and the bottom floors have just tile.) I dont really reccomend living in Watertown, the apts are just not that good. Although they are cheap. The shop I work in has apts above it, its mid october, nights have been down between 30 and 43F, and the apt manager (the owners live in NYC) has yet to turn on the heat.
