South Dakota vs. Alaska

Ellsworth AFB

This is the first base i've lived at, as my mother married my step-father last year who was based in Alaska where i've lived all my life (a little less than 18 years) until a few weeks ago when I left Alaska (where i was living with my father) to live with them. I must say, the grass still being green in November, even October, is an odd thing to me. I'm really enjoying the weather here, I've heard there can be some intense snow storms in the winter, and just as intense thunderstorms in the summer. I come from a place where it's normal to drive on icy roads for half the year, and it can get -40 (without the windchill) and people still go on living their daily lives, and the schools only close when it gets warm and rains during the winter. So it's nice to get away from that, and not have to deal with a constant supply of snow and ice from October to April. Though, geographically, it's not very appealing to the eyes. Honsetly, since I've moved here i've started to feel bad for the Native Americans, and what the Europeans did to this place. The billboards here blow me away, they are absolutely horrid. It looks like Corporate America threw up all over the land. Though I must say, there are more stores and restaurants then there are in Fairbanks (where I used to live, which is roughly 20 miles north of Eielson AFB), and it's nice to have a little more variety. As far as the people, I haven't really met any, though it doesn't seem like there aren't the greatest drivers around here. In general, there's nothing really that special about this place, Except for maybe the gas station turned coffee shop, "Gizzi's" right outside the base entrance, they got some good coffee. I guess I don't really have a lower-48 mind set, Alaska is a unique place to grow up in, and I haven't noticed anything that unique about this place. I guess if anyone's got the choice between here and Alaska, I would say go to Alaska if you want a unique experience. And as for Ellsworth specifically, I've heard it's not the best run base, that it's pretty casual. So anyway, i dunno if this helps any with anything, it's just what i think.
